THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOEFL PBT AND TOEFL CBT
What is TOEFL?
- TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language is an English Proficiency
test, conducted to evaluate the English speaking and understanding
ability of a candidate. You need to take the TOEFL test if you want to study in America, Canada, England and Australia. This is
a requirement among non-native, English speakers so that they can be
admitted into the college or university of their choice.
TOEFL has essentially two versions: TOEFL CBT and
TOEFL PBT (paper-based test). Both the versions of TOEFL have four
sections- Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing.
TOEFL PBT:
The TOEFL test was originally a paper-based
test (PBT). You read/listened to the questions and marked your answers
on a paper that were then sent off from marking. There was no spoken
section and no video. The score range on a PBT goes from 310-677.
The difference between TOEFL CBT and TOEFL
PBT is mainly in the administration method --> by computers connected
to the internet and by paper.
TOEFL CBT:
The CBT (Computer Based Test) test using a
computer. You read/listen/watch questions on
the computer then answer on the computer either by selecting a/b/c/d/e
lists, by typing answers or by recording on a microphone. Because the
test now includes speaking as well as video combined with reading and
listening exercises in an integrated way, it is a more thorough
examination of all your language skills.
The CBT tests have been completely replaced with the iBT. The CBT-type of
exam was discontinued in the year 2006. And if you ever had taken a CBT
examination, your scores are no longer valid. Several countries have
adapted the iBT which include the United States, Canada, Germany,
France, Italy, and other parts of the world.
